Dive Conditions
Shark Fin Reef, located at Payang Island in the Similan Islands, is a premier dive site in Thailand’s Andaman Sea. This reef gets its name from a distinctive rocky formation that resembles a shark’s fin, rising prominently from the seafloor.
Divers encounter colorful hard and soft corals, intricate coral gardens, and numerous rocky outcrops between depths of 5-30 meters (16-98 feet), making it accessible to divers of varying experience levels. The site offers excellent visibility, typically 15-25 meters.
The reef attracts abundant marine life including reef sharks, barracuda, groupers, snappers, trevally, and smaller tropical fish species. Macro enthusiasts will appreciate nudibranchs, shrimp, and crustaceans among the corals.
Shark Fin Reef is considered moderately easy to intermediate in difficulty, suitable for certified divers with some experience. Currents can vary, requiring awareness of conditions. The site’s diverse topography and thriving ecosystem make it a favorite among both leisure and adventurous divers exploring the Similan Islands.
