Sail Rock
# Sail Rock Dive Site
Dive Conditions
Sail Rock stands as Koh Tao’s most iconic dive destination, featuring a dramatic pinnacle rising 40 meters from the seafloor to just 5 meters below the surface. This intermediate to advanced dive site suits experienced divers seeking challenging conditions and exceptional marine encounters.
The towering rock formation creates a natural gathering point for pelagic species. Divers frequently encounter whale sharks, manta rays, and various mackerel species along the current-swept channels. The site’s depth ranges from 5 to 40 meters, allowing exploration of different marine ecosystems within a single dive.
Vibrant coral growth adorns the rock’s upper sections, while deeper areas reveal sandy substrates and rocky crevices hosting smaller marine life including groupers and lionfish. School of jacks and trevally often patrol the pinnacle’s edges.
Strong currents and surge make Sail Rock demanding; only advanced divers with excellent buoyancy control should attempt this site. Multiple annual visits by whale sharks during seasonal months make it Thailand’s premier large pelagic dive experience in the Gulf of Thailand.
